Step Inside the Stones with an Exclusive Expert-Led Experience

Updated August 2025

For visitors with a General Admission ticket, Stonehenge can only be admired from the perimeter path. But the Stonehenge Explorer’s Tour offers something extraordinary: the chance to walk directly into the heart of the stone circle in an intimate, expert-led experience that few ever get to enjoy. This three-hour tour combines behind-the-scenes access, expert storytelling, and a closer encounter with Stonehenge than any standard ticket allows.

Where to Book:

Your journey begins at the Stonehenge Visitor Centre, where two expert guides welcome you and your small group—never more than six people. You’ll climb into a Land Rover and set off across Salisbury Plain to explore the wider prehistoric landscape. Stops include Woodhenge, a timber circle aligned with the solstice sunrise, and other lesser-known earthworks, barrows, and outlying stones that reveal the scale and ritual significance of the area.

Back at the visitor centre, you’ll step inside a reconstructed Neolithic house and see objects excavated from the Stonehenge landscape, gaining insight into how the builders lived and worshiped. Then comes the highlight: your guided walk through the Stonehenge monument field, followed by an extraordinary 15 minutes alone inside the stone circle itself. As conservation checks are carried out, your guides share what it takes to preserve this fragile monument, while you stand among the towering sarsens and bluestones—close enough to touch the history of 4,500 years.

The experience is enhanced by thoughtful touches: a locally sourced food and drink hamper enjoyed during the ride, and a Stonehenge tote bag, guidebook, and small gift presented at the end of the tour to remember your visit.

Participants should arrive at the Stonehenge car park by 1:45 p.m., ready to meet at the membership office. The tour involves walking over uneven ground, so it is most suitable for visitors with good mobility. Dress in layers and sturdy shoes, as Salisbury Plain is famously exposed to wind and weather. Dietary requirements for the hamper can be accommodated if arranged in advance.

Tickets must be booked online well in advance due to the extremely limited group size. The tour is conducted in English, but interpreters are welcome (with their own ticket). Photography is permitted, and with so few people inside the stones, you’ll have the rare opportunity to capture photographs unobstructed by crowds.

The Stonehenge Explorer’s Tour is not just a visit, but an immersion—an intimate journey through the prehistoric landscape with expert guides, capped by a once-in-a-lifetime chance to stand inside the stone circle itself. For those seeking the deepest and most personal Stonehenge experience available, this is the tour to book.
