NOTE: Keukenhof Gardens is open seasonally from mid-March through early-May
Wander Through a Dazzling Sea of Tulips in the World’s Most Beautiful Spring Garden
Updated October 2025
Keukenhof is the world’s most famous spring flower park, a seasonally planted wonderland of millions of bulb flowers—tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and more—spreading colour across landscaped gardens and exhibition pavilions for a limited run each spring. To enjoy it well, the single smartest move is to buy a timed-entry ticket in advance, since the park operates on half-hour arrival slots and popular dates in April can sell out weeks ahead; Keukenhof normally opens mid-March through early/mid-May, with exact seasonal dates published on the official site each year.

Where to Book:
Plan your visit around timing and light: arrive early (first slot) or late afternoon to avoid the thickest crowds and to get the best photography light—the early morning and late-day hours also give softer sunlight across the fields and fewer tour buses. Weekdays, especially Monday to Wednesday, are generally quieter than weekends, and mid-April is often the peak window when the largest variety and density of tulip cultivars are in bloom. If you’re flexible, aim for off-peak weekdays or the opening/closing days of the season for a calmer experience.
A typical Keukenhof ticket grants access to the landscaped gardens, indoor floral pavilions, the windmill area, and short walks to viewing platforms; tickets are sold online and many tour operators also sell bundled transport or combo packages from Amsterdam. The park usually operates daily from early morning until the evening (for example, many seasons run roughly 08:00–19:00), and you can stay in the gardens for several hours once inside, though the park does use restricted entry slots so check the arrival window on your ticket. If Keukenhof is sold out on a given date, consider a nearby tulip-field drive or a packaged tour that reserves slots on your behalf.
For a different perspective on the gardens, you may opt for adding the Whisper Boat trip as an optional extra. The whisper-boat is an electrically propelled, 45-minute audio-guided cruise around the surrounding bulb fields that departs near the Keukenhof windmill. Tickets for the boat are extra (about €11 for adults) and you must hold a Keukenhof admission ticket to take the ride; the boat gives you a quiet, scenic water-level perspective of the fields and an onboard audio narration in several languages. Because capacity is limited, the boat can sell out on busy days—book early in the day or check availability when you enter the park.
Practicalities matter: dress in layers and wear comfortable shoes because the fields are exposed to wind and unpredictable spring weather; bring sunscreen and a waterproof layer just in case. Large bags and commercial tripods can be a hassle—travel light if you plan to take photos. If you’re driving, note that parking is separately charged at busy times; most visitors favour public transport or arranged coaches from Amsterdam central points. Also check Keukenhof’s daily flowering report and live updates before you travel so you know which flower types are peaking; the display changes with weather and timing of plantings each season.
If you want bucket-list photos with minimal distractions, aim for the very first entry slot, or try the final slot near closing when tour groups have left; both give cleaner lines for photography and more peaceful strolling. Families with small children will find playgrounds and child-friendly areas, and the indoor pavilions are great fallback options on rainier days. Remember that Keukenhof is intensely seasonal—booking early, checking the bloom reports, and adding the whisper-boat if you want field-level views will transform a crowded spring outing into a calm, picture-perfect day.
