Stand Before America’s Enduring Symbol of Freedom, Hope, and Opportunity for Generations

Updated December 2025

A visit to the Statue of Liberty is one of the most iconic experiences in New York City. Standing on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, Lady Liberty has welcomed visitors and new arrivals to the United States since 1886 and remains a powerful symbol of freedom and immigration. While many travelers admire her from afar, visiting the island itself offers a much deeper and more memorable experience, especially for those who plan ahead.

All official visits to the Statue of Liberty begin with a ferry operated by Statue City Cruises, the only authorized provider. Ferries depart from Battery Park in Lower Manhattan and Liberty State Park in New Jersey, and tickets include round-trip transportation as well as access to Liberty Island and Ellis Island. Because tickets are timed and daily capacity is limited, especially during spring, summer, and holiday periods, booking in advance is strongly recommended.

The most basic ticket allows access to Liberty Island grounds and the Statue of Liberty Museum, which provides an excellent introduction to the monument’s history, construction, and symbolism. Even without entering the statue itself, visitors can walk the island, enjoy harbor views, and explore exhibits that include the original torch. This option is widely available and ideal for travelers who want flexibility or are booking closer to their visit date.

For a more immersive experience, pedestal access tickets allow visitors to enter the statue’s base and climb up to the pedestal observation level. From here, you can view the interior structure of the statue and enjoy elevated views of the harbor and Manhattan skyline. Pedestal tickets are more limited than general admission and often sell out several weeks in advance during peak travel seasons, so early booking is important if this is a priority.

The most exclusive and sought-after option is crown access. Crown tickets allow visitors to climb the narrow spiral staircase inside the statue to the crown, where small windows offer a unique perspective from the top. Access to the crown is extremely limited, with only a small number of visitors allowed per day, and tickets often sell out months in advance. Crown visits require climbing 162 steps from the pedestal, navigating tight spaces, and standing for extended periods, so they are not suitable for visitors with mobility issues, claustrophobia, or certain health conditions.

All visitors must pass airport-style security screening before boarding the ferry, and those visiting the pedestal or crown will go through additional security on Liberty Island. Large bags, food, and drinks are restricted inside the statue, and lockers are provided for items that cannot be brought in. Comfortable shoes are essential, particularly for those climbing stairs, and visitors should allow plenty of time for security, ferry travel, and exploring the island.

A full visit to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island typically takes four to five hours, making it a half-day experience. Early morning ferry departures are often less crowded and provide a calmer experience on the island, while midday visits tend to be busier. Weather can also play a role, as outdoor areas are exposed, so checking the forecast and dressing accordingly is wise.

Visiting the Statue of Liberty is more than a photo opportunity. Whether you choose general island access, the pedestal, or the unforgettable climb to the crown, planning ahead and selecting the right ticket type can transform your visit into one of the most meaningful highlights of your time in New York City.
